The Costitx Town Council has decided to stand up to incivility and has launched an emergency plan to secure the waste disposal site with a new access card system and the installation of surveillance cameras equipped with artificial intelligence. This has resulted in the imposition of a dozen fines in the first half-year of operation.

This technological renewal seeks to put an end to the irregular practices that have been detected recently, such as the throwing of trash bags over the barrier by people who do not have a card or the illegal dumping of construction debris, an action that is totally prohibited in the municipality. At the same time, it will allow for a more precise record of who enters and leaves the facilities, ensuring a more correct and responsible use of the service by the citizens.

The new cameras have already begun to bear fruit and, in less than half a year, the City Council has imposed a dozen sanctions that make it clear that incivility is expensive: the least serious infractions involve fines of 120 euros, while the serious ones rise to 300 euros and the very serious ones, especially for the dumping of debris within the municipal facilities, can be punished with up to 1,000 euros.

To avoid any setbacks, residents should remember that the only requirement to obtain the new access card is to present the last waste tax receipt at the Town Hall, with the right to two free cards per household, while in case of loss, the replacement will cost 10 euros.

With this stricter control, Costitx reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and the correct management of waste, ensuring that the service is used responsibly and only by those who are truly entitled to it.

Furthermore, Costitx, like the rest of the municipalities in the Commonwealth, has added a new system of mobile containers, image above, for use at parties and events with large crowds.
