PalmHundreds of doctors demonstrated this Thursday afternoon in the streets of downtown Palma as part of a new week of nationwide strikes demanding improved working conditions and a specific statute for their profession. The demonstration began shortly after 6:30 p.m., departing from the Balearic Islands Medical Association and proceeding through the city center to the Government Delegation building, where the doctors read a manifesto. During the march, many participants, dressed in white coats, chanted slogans such as Minister, I resign, the doctors won't admit you, 'Monica, traitor, where are you now? either 'Sánchez, fire her.The protest ended with an ambulance with its lights on, bringing up the rear of the procession.
The demonstration is part of a new week of strikes by doctors across the country, who are demanding the approval of their own statute, improvements in working conditions, regulation of working hours, and measures to reduce excessive workloads. According to the Balearic Islands Doctors' Union (Simebal), patient associations and medical students from the University of the Balearic Islands also participated in the protest.
Before the start of the demonstration, the president of the Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions (CESM), Miguel Lázaro, stated that, after months of negotiations with the Ministry of Health, "very little progress" had been made. He also reiterated that, according to the union, the negotiations were unilaterally broken off last December. Lázaro called for the intervention of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, and criticized the Ministry of Health's handling of the conflict, arguing that the doctors' demands are not covered by the current legal framework.
