UIB

Jorge Campos now charges against the UIB and labels it as a "swamp where separatist intolerance wallows."

The far-right deputy has continued to defend his offensive against the student who graduated with a hijab and now attacks the UIB, accusing it of being "the gateway to Islamization."

PalmaThe Vox deputy in Congress, Jorge Campos, has intensified the controversy generated by his criticism of the participation of a student wearing a hijab in the graduation ceremony of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). After the academic institution defended the student —who has a brilliant academic record—, Campos has lashed out at the university's management team and has even stated that the UIB's "separatist Catalanism" is an "entry point to Islamization".

In a message published on social networks, the deputy assures that the university "has been annoyed" because he considered it "incorrect for a Muslim woman with an Islamic veil to represent the students of the Balearic Islands". Campos states that his criticism "did not point to any student", but rather to the fact that, according to him, "the Islamic veil represents the submission of women" and is "a symbol incompatible with the dignity of women and with the democratic values that a public university should defend".

Furthermore, it accuses the UIB of having become "the quagmire where separatist intolerance wallows", assures that acts "in defense of terrorist groups such as ETA and Hamas" are permitted there and denounces an alleged persecution of "linguistic freedom".

Campos has also publicly offered to attend a debate at the UIB with any member of the Governing Council on issues such as "dignity, equality of persons, diversity, languages, origins, sensitivities, and convictions." Likewise, he warns that, if he does not receive a response, he will interpret it as "further proof that the separatist Catalanism of the UIB is also a gateway to Islamization."

The controversy originated after Campos published a photograph of Khaoula Ikkene, a graduate in Computer Engineering, who spoke during the graduation ceremony on behalf of the 1,375 students who have completed their degree studies at the UIB this year. In the message, the deputy questioned that she was one of those in charge of addressing the graduates because she wore a hijab.

The University of the Balearic Islands defended its student and recalled that the representation of graduates responds exclusively to academic and institutional criteria, with no connection to religious beliefs or people's origins. In this sense, lawyer Aina Díaz, who studied Law at the UIB with Jorge Campos, expressed herself, reproaching him that he had never been entrusted with the task of giving the graduation speech, implying that his academic record was not among the best of the promotion. "Jorge, this UIB is the same one where we studied Law together. Neither now nor then would you have been chosen to give the graduation speech. And that's despite you not wearing a veil and always wearing a Spanish bracelet," the jurist pointed out on X.

Another of the recognitions was given by the IES Mossèn Alcover de Manacor, which has also expressed itself in this regard, as Ikkene is a former student. The center has recognized her as a student who has represented "on her own academic merits, the values that are part of our educational project", while also sending her their congratulations through their Instagram profile.
