Large farms fail to report manure spills and strong odors in Son Venrell de Sineu
The organization warns of the environmental risk in a vulnerable area and demands explanations from the Ministry of Agriculture.
SinedThe tranquility in Sineu and the Son Venrell area has been disrupted once again. The Macrogranges No platform has reported a new manure spill to the Ministry of Agriculture on the property where the mega-farm was to be built. It occurred on Thursday, March 19th. According to the organization, the spill caused "strong odors" that spread throughout the municipality of Sineu and were clearly noticeable even to residents of Lloret de Vistalegre, generating considerable public concern. The incident was not only documented by local witnesses, but the Sineu Local Police and agents from the Seprona (Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard) were also notified and carried out the necessary on-site investigations. The platform has expressed its "grave concern" about the environmental impact these practices could have in an area "considered vulnerable, especially due to the risk of nitrate contamination of the subsoil and groundwater."
The mayor of Sineu, Tomeu Mulet, has stated that "the City Council has monitored these discharges, just as it has monitored others. Each time, a detailed report is prepared to ensure compliance with the established measures." This documentation is then submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture, and government technicians certify that the company meets all the requirements.
Furthermore, in the document submitted this Monday, March 23, the platform poses three key questions to the Administration:
- Registration and frequency: They ask if there is an official record of these discharges, and also reiterate that they cannot be carried out weekly or monthly without technical justification.
- Agronomic need: They urge to know if a prior soil analysis has been carried out to justify the fertilizer and if the limits to avoid water contamination are met.
- Transportation: They request confirmation as to whether the trucks used had the necessary licenses for transporting waste.
In this regard, let's remember that this episode is part of the long struggle against the mega-farm project in Son Venrell. It's worth recalling that the promoting company, Avícola Son Perot, received a definitive "no" from the Balearic Government in January 2025 for its project of 750,000 hens. Although the company attempted to reformulate the initiative into a pig farm, it finally announced its withdrawal in February 2025. Since then, the Son Venrell property has been used to dump manure from the company's other farms in Mallorca. Finally, the Macrogranges No platform warns that it will remain vigilant regarding any activity on the property that could compromise public health or the environment, and demands that the necessary measures be taken to prevent "indiscriminate dumping."
