Mallorcan designer Marc Masmiquel dies at 53
He championed social, environmental, and technological innovation to combat climate change through award-winning projects.
PalmThe Mallorcan designer Marc Masmiquel has died at the age of 53 as a result of cancer. A collaborator of the Spanish Association for Environmental Impact Assessment and a consultant for UNESCO on oceanographic issues, he had been championing alternative economy models for years with projects, such as the green, social and common good.
In March, Masmiquel shared his health on the social network X: "A year ago I was diagnosed with cancer, with little life expectancy. Thanks to my loved ones, I am fighting. After going from 85 to 50 kg and months of quite tough times, I began an aggressive treatment. Important ones, those guided by love."
The Mallorcan was part of Wearelab.es, an innovation laboratory made up of designers, engineers, scientists and researchers. Focused on social, environmental, and technological innovation, Masmiquel championed innovations in the circular economy, the regeneration of marine diversity, aerospace research, and alternatives to plastics with carbon-negative eco-materials.
With the Sustainable Filaments project, he won the first prize for Circular Economy from the Consell de Mallorca. He also received the prize from the Círculo de Economía de Mallorca with Nereidas, a plan to regenerate marine biodiversity through 3D-printed artificial reefs. Masmiquel explained that one hectare of posidonia captures carbon monoxide and generates more oxygen than 15 hectares of the Amazon rainforest. Once again, he emphasized, as he has throughout his professional life, the importance of conserving, caring for, and regenerating the marine biodiversity of the Balearic Islands.
