PalmaManacor wants to end growing incivility and prevent waste and bulky items from ending up abandoned out of place. For this reason, the City Council has just spent almost 112,000 euros on the construction of four contribution points in different areas of the municipality. They are a kind of wooden and iron cages, 12 meters long, enclosed, with access only for residents, and video-surveilled all day long.

According to the Councilor for Environment, Mateu Marcé, the objective, in addition to aesthetic and control, "is to prevent waste tourism," coming mainly from vacation rentals on rustic land, companies in the sector, and individuals arriving from other municipalities.

In fact, the surveillance system installed at all these new points will allow the Local Police and the Environment technicians of the civic unit to open sanctioning proceedings against all persons who misuse them, take out the waste outside the established hours, or reoffend in illegal contributions that should go directly to the green point to be treated.

In fact, the Manacor City Council has already opened more than 50 cases so far in this regard, with fines that the municipal ordinance sets from 200 to 750 euros in the case of bulky items. "The aim is to dignify these spaces and ensure they are kept clean if sanctions are to be avoided".

The four new contribution areas are located at the Hipòdrom, on the Son Moix-Ronda Felanitx road, at the Miquel Àngel Nadal sports center, and at the Torre de l'Aigua, in Cales de Mallorca.

Complement to door-to-door collection

The areas complement the municipal door-to-door collection system and offer an alternative to facilitate waste management for people living outside the urban center who do not have a home collection service.

Currently and until the end of the year, the contribution areas will be open, and residents living in outlying houses can use them without needing an access card. Later, the City Council will inform about the definitive operation of the system and meetings will be held with residents to explain the new operation of the areas, which will be activated with the current cards that open the organic waste containers.

The contribution areas can be used from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM and organic matter, packaging waste, paper, glass, and reject waste can be deposited there. The City Council reminds that it is not permitted to deposit bulky waste or junk in the contribution areas. To manage this waste, it can be taken to the Manacor ecopark or the free bulky waste collection service can be used by calling 900 107 398.
