Nearly 37 tons of waste removed from the Balearic coast
There has been a 32% increase compared to last year
PalmThe Coastal Cleaning Service has closed the 2025 season with a total of 36,804 kilos of waste removed from the Canary Islands' coasts, representing a 32% increase compared to the previous year. The campaign, carried out between May and September, aimed to preserve environmental quality and safety in coastal and port areas, the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle reported in a statement on Saturday. In total, the 23 vessels deployed—eight inshore and fifteen beach-oriented—operated for 153 days, collecting an average of 269 kilos of waste per day.
Mallorca was the island with the highest volume of waste removed, with 17,520 kilos, followed by Ibiza (9,598), Menorca (6,019), and Formentera (3,666). Regarding municipalities, Calvià, Andratx, and Alcúdia stand out as those that have accumulated the most waste. Plastic accounted for 44% of the total collected, followed by wood (34%) and vegetation (8%). The service responded to 24 specific calls, mostly from 112 and Maritime Rescue, related to spills, removal of drifting objects, and support in maritime incidents.
Furthermore, he maintained his collaboration with scientific organizations such as SOCIB, CSIC, and the Oceanographic Institute, which took advantage of his work to conduct studies on microplastics and jellyfish.
