Neighborhood associations ask Cort to toughen restrictions on the night sale of alcohol

PalmaThe neighborhood associations of the Passeig Marítim, Santa Catalina and el Jonquet, la Llotja-Born, Pere Garau, and el Terreno demand that Palma City Council toughen restrictions on the night-time sale of alcohol in supermarkets and convenience stores. The entities consider that the actions taken so far "have not been sufficient to prevent the repetition of certain behaviors" and ask the City Council to adopt new measures to limit the activity of establishments that accumulate incidents.
In a joint statement, the associations reported that they have collected 25 complaints or mentions related to eight establishments of this type. According to the documentation provided by the residents, in 17 of the 25 cases there is a repetition of incidents.
Faced with this situation, the entities request that Palma City Council promote the necessary legal and administrative measures to limit the night-time hours of establishments where a repetition of incidents has been proven.
They propose closing between 9:30 PM and 8:00 AM
The associations propose as a possible reference a closing window between 9:30 PM and 8:00 AM, which is already provided for certain areas or commercial activities. In any case, they leave it in the hands of the City Council to study this or any other time limitation that, within the applicable legal framework, allows for a result they consider "effective and proportionate".
The entities thus argue that the restrictions should not necessarily be applied in a generalized manner, but that establishments where a repetition of incidents has been confirmed should be especially taken into account.
According to the documentation collected by the neighbors, there are establishments in the promenade area that appear mentioned up to four times. In the case of Pere Garau, the report prepared by the entities also includes a private investigation in which, they claim, beer purchases were documented after midnight in five supermarkets.
The associations consider that this data evidences the need to strengthen control mechanisms over the nocturnal sale of alcohol and demand that the municipal government act on the establishments that concentrate the most incidents.
The request comes after the neighborhood entities considered the actions taken so far insufficient to prevent the repetition of certain behaviors linked to these establishments. For this reason, they demand that the City Council adopt the administrative and legal measures that are necessary to guarantee compliance with the restrictions and reduce the disturbances associated with nocturnal activity.
