One of the walls of the medieval tower of the Sant Pere Bastion collapses

ARCA denounces the institutional "inaction" following the collapse of a section of the wall, a listed building that has been awaiting restoration for at least eight years.

One of the medieval towers located next to the Sant Pere Bastion in Palma has suffered a partial collapse of one of its walls, as reported Tuesday by the Association for the Revitalization of Historic Centers (ARCA). The organization describes the incident as "extremely serious" and points out that the collapse affects a section of wall "with significant depth," beyond what can be seen in the images. The tower, dating from the 16th century and built on an earlier Islamic-era foundation, is part of the Sant Pere Bastion's defensive complex and is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC). Therefore, ARCA considers the deterioration to be endangering a "first-rate" heritage element and demands immediate action. Years of unanswered complaints

The association has expressed its "outrage" at a collapse that it claims was foreseeable. It points out that it has been demanding the restoration of the tower from both the Consell de Mallorca and the Palma City Council for years, without success. "We have only received empty promises and the pledge that the project was being drafted, and that was at least eight years ago," they lament.

According to ARCA, the lack of intervention and neglect in heritage maintenance "ends up having very negative consequences," such as those that have now materialized. A call for urgent intervention.

Regarding the collapse, the organization explains that the detachment occurred in a section of the wall on the eastern facade and that the situation requires urgent action. They are demanding the immediate intervention of a restoration specialist to provide technical instructions for stabilizing the structure and halting its collapse. Furthermore, they are requesting an archaeological study of the fallen materials and the drafting of a "serious" and comprehensive restoration project that will allow for the tower's recovery and guarantee its future preservation. Demands on the institutions

ARCA urges the Consell de Mallorca and the Palma City Council to take immediate action to prevent further collapses, ensure the preservation of the affected elements, and implement a comprehensive restoration project. The organization insists that this is a unique heritage site that cannot remain at risk.
