"Out, out!": rebellion of residents against yachts in Valldemossa and El Trenc

ValldemossaThe hours leading up to the total Solar eclipse have seen the first protests over the occupation of some of Mallorca's most sought-after spots. At the port of Valldemossa, swimmers managed to get a yacht anchored on a Posidonia seagrass meadow to raise its anchor. At Trenc beach, the Government's Environment agents removed a large deployment of furniture that a group of workers from a luxury boat had installed on the sand to observe the phenomenon.

The port of Valldemossa was already closed this Wednesday to unauthorized vehicles. Many residents had gone down early to reserve a spot from which to contemplate the eclipse or to have a drink before the phenomenon when they detected a yacht anchored on a Posidonia meadow.
Swimmers alerted the crew and some even swam to the boat. Seeing that the ship was not leaving, from the beach and from the bar they began to shout "out, out", as shown by the videos recorded at the site.
Finally, the boat, which was flying a British flag, raised anchor and left the area. The swimmers bid it farewell with applause.
A setup with loungers and inflatable armchairs at Trenc
The second scene has taken place on Trenc beach. Several residents have reported that, since early morning, a group of people had occupied a part of the sand with a setup typical of a private space: sun loungers, parasols, cushions, tables, chairs, fabrics, and large inflatable armchairs.
According to testimonies collected at the scene, the material had been transported from a luxury boat anchored off the beach to prepare an exclusive space from which to watch the eclipse.
The installation has raised protests from beach users, who have reported the events to the Civil Guard. Images of the area also began to circulate on social networks early in the morning.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment later confirmed the official intervention. According to a social media post, Environmental agents removed all the material. The authorities have not specified whether any proceedings have been opened or if the intervention will result in sanctions.
The two episodes show the tension generated by the extraordinary pressure on the coast and the most sought-after observation points in Mallorca during the eclipse day. While administrations have restricted roads and access to prevent collapses, residents have also reacted to uses they consider an appropriation of public space and the coastline.
