PalmaThe protest against mass tourism continues to gain presence in Mallorca. A new protest action has led to the appearance of a banner with the slogan 'Mass tourism destroys Mallorca' in the s'Estret de Valldemossa area, one of the busiest crossing points on the road connecting the municipality with Palma.

The promoters have chosen this point because they consider Valldemossa to be one of the municipalities in Mallorca that suffers most intensely from tourist pressure. According to them, it is the second most overcrowded municipality on the island, a situation that, in their opinion, makes the effects of the tourism model on Mallorcan towns particularly evident.

The objective of the action is to generate awareness about the effects of mass tourism and to convey the message also to visitors traveling on this road. The banner is especially visible to vehicles leaving Valldemossa, as it has been placed at a point where numerous people pass by every day.

The initiators of the protest consider that the situation in Valldemossa is an example of a phenomenon that affects the entire island. "Mass tourism has caused many people to burn out," they point out, while also focusing on road saturation. "The road to Valldemossa is collapsed day after day," they denounce.

For the promoters, the problem is not limited to the number of visitors, but also to how mass tourism transforms the spaces where the population lives. They consider that this model "changes the cities, the neighborhoods, or the towns" and warn that this transformation ends up causing "the essence and quality of life of the Majorcans to be lost.

A demanding and peaceful action

The promoters insist that it is a vindicative and peaceful action, which has not caused damage to urban furniture or the environment. The choice of the Estret de Valldemossa responds precisely to the high visibility. "We put it there because many people pass by every day, especially tourists," they argue.

For the promoters, giving visibility to this type of action can also contribute to multiplying citizen initiatives. In this sense, they consider that this type of protest can encourage other people to promote new peaceful and vindicative actions.

They also argue that this visibility can serve to "contribute to the construction of public opinion towards this tourism" and maintain the debate on Mallorca's tourism model. The action thus joins other initiatives that in recent weeks have focused on mass tourism, infrastructure saturation, and the effects of the current tourism model on daily life in Mallorca.
