PalmStorm Alice severely affected Ibiza and Formentera, as well as parts of Mallorca, this Saturday. This led the Government's General Directorate of Emergencies to send out mass ES-Alert messages. Furthermore, the Meteobal Plan has also been activated on all the islands, but in different operational situations: Operational Situation 2 (SO-2) in Ibiza and Formentera, SO-1 in Mallorca, and SO-0 in Menorca. Likewise, the Meteobal Plan remains on orange alert (IG-1) for all the Balearic Islands.
Meanwhile, the deployment of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) in Ibiza has been activated following a request from the Balearic Islands.
According to the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands, the UME troops deployed from Valencia will arrive in the largest of the Pitiusas at 10:00 a.m.
Specifically, the alert message, ES-Alert, has been sent to mobile phones at 4:58 p.m. in Formentera, at 5:22 p.m. in Ibiza, and, for the first time ever, at 6:26 p.m. in the eastern, northeastern, and northern areas of Mallorca.
The Emergency Coordination Center is working intensively to manage and coordinate all necessary operations to resolve the ongoing incidents.
The Ibiza Council has closed the road at the airport and suspended transport services throughout the island. According to the Administration, the road to the airport was completely closed, with the San José road being used as an alternative. However, it has been reopened only for strictly necessary travel.
Ibiza Airport was forced to halt operations this Saturday between 6:00 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. due to heavy rain. A total of 24 flights were suspended, according to AENA.
In addition, the Sant Antoni road has been partially closed due to flooding; specifically, the section between the Corazón de Jesús industrial estate and Ibiza. At around 7 p.m., the bus service resumed service in areas where the rain had least affected the area. The CETIS station was closed, and buses were stopped outside.
The Puig d'en Valls underpass has also been closed due to flooding. Therefore, the Island Council has requested that only strictly necessary travel be carried out.
Formentera's road network has suffered significant damage as a result of the heavy rains, so the Formentera Island Council has asked residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to exercise extreme caution.
Storm Alice has left a total of 883 users affected by power outages in the Balearic Islands, according to the 112 Emergency Service. By island, 576 users are affected in Formentera after a lightning strike cut a power line.
Meanwhile, in Menorca, 272 users have been affected, the majority in Ciutadella (231) and the remainder (31) in Castell. The cases in Ibiza and Mallorca are being resolved shortly. Work is continuing on the remaining areas.
Gárriz also noted that the ports are operating normally (there was one incident involving a boat in Formentera, but it was unrelated to the weather), as is Menorca Airport. The airports of Ibiza and Palma have experienced delays and cancellations.
According to the National Emergency Services (112), storm Alice continues to affect the Balearic Islands. Therefore, the emergency services have urged everyone to remain cautious and follow the recommendations issued by the Emergency Services, given the likelihood of heavy rain expected this Saturday in the Balearic Islands, especially in Ibiza, Formentera, and specific areas of Mallorca.
The emergency services have also urged the public to pay attention to updates on warnings from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in the Balearic Islands.
