Surgical waiting lists worsen: patients wait almost 108 days on average

PalmaHealthcare waiting lists continue to worsen in the Balearic Islands. As of July 31, a total of 17,139 people were awaiting surgical intervention in the public hospitals of the Islands, an 18.2% increase compared to the same month last year. Furthermore, the average waiting time to undergo surgery has increased to 107.71 days, an 11% increase compared to July 2025, according to updated IB-Salut data.

The increase is also reflected in patients who accumulate longer waits. Specifically, 3,039 people have been waiting for an operation for more than six months, a figure that represents 53.8% more than a year ago. On the other hand, 1,103 patients accumulate between 150 and 180 days of waiting, 16.2% more than in July 2025.

By hospitals, Son Espases concentrates the highest number of patients awaiting an intervention, with 6,781 people on the waiting list. They are followed by Son Llàtzer, with 3,340 patients; Can Misses (Ibiza), with 1,874; Manacor Hospital, with 1,857; Mateu Orfila (Menorca), with 1,792; Inca Hospital, with 1,475; and Formentera Hospital, with 22.

More than 95,000 people are waiting for a first visit with a specialist

The data also show a deterioration in waiting lists to access a first consultation with a specialist. The average waiting time has reached 65.17 days, 7.3% more than a year ago. In total, 95,922 people were waiting for a first specialized visit at the end of July, 24.4% more than in the same period in 2025.

Patients who have been waiting for a specialized consultation for more than two months now number 37,079, 38.2% more than a year ago. The only indicator showing positive progress is that of patients who have been waiting for more than a year to be seen by a specialist. In this case, the figure has decreased by 37.9% and stands at 281 people, the only decrease among all indicators that make up the Balearic Islands' health waiting lists.
