The intake of table olives harvested in traditional olive groves already exceeds the total harvest for 2024.

This year the workshops have already received 4,445 kilos of olives, while last year the total harvest was half a ton.

Producers of table olives under the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Oliva de Mallorca are already facing the final days of harvesting, and so far, the olive mills have harvested 4,445 kilos of olives. This figure represents "30% of the estimated production that can be harvested this year," explained Andreu Oliver, president of the regulatory council, this Wednesday.

These figures are better than those recorded in the previous campaign, which closed with a production of only half a ton as a result of the lack of rain and the action of the olive fruit fly. All of this contributed to the low yield of the olive trees.

However, this year, if the sector's production forecasts are met, the presence of table olives with the PDO Oliva de Mallorca quality seal in the markets would be guaranteed throughout the next year. This would allay the growing concern among producers as stocks dwindle, particularly of green cracked olives, which are the most sought-after by consumers.

Regarding mountain olive groves, the Director General of Food Quality and Local Produce, Joan Llabrés, highlighted the special value and support of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment for initiatives such as those of the producers of the Oliva de Mallorca PDO.

Along the same lines, the Island Director of the Tramuntana Mountains, Antoni Solivellas, mentioned the project to catalog ancient olive trees that the Tramuntana Mountains Consortium intends to carry out, which "would expand the possibilities for promoting mountain olive groves and the products they offer."

The black olive harvest, which will take place between January and March, will mark the end of the campaign for the 94 olive growers and three producers registered with the Oliva de Mallorca PDO (DOP). They produce table olives of the Mallorcan variety from traditional plantations, mostly in the mountains.
