The Balearic Islands exceed 40 degrees in September for the first time in history

PalmaThe Balearic Islands reached a maximum temperature of 40.1 degrees in Llucmajor this Monday, an unprecedented figure that marks a new record for the month of September and, above all, a record never before reached outside of the summer quarter – June, July, and August – since meteorological records have been kept in the Islands.

As explained by the spokesperson for Aemet in the Balearics, Maria José Guerrero, the episode is due to a situation of "atmospheric stability" and the presence of a warm air mass that has been over the Archipelago for several days, combined with high solar radiation.

The record was not the only one. Exceptional maximums were also recorded in Palma-UIB (38.9 °C), Santa Maria (38.9 °C), Campos (38.8 °C), Binissalem (38.5 °C), Manacor (38.9 °C), Lluc (36.8 °C), and Sant Joan de Labritja, in Ibiza (38.4 °C). In fact, the episode has left records for several consecutive days.

Geographer Miquel Salamanca highlights that, for the second day in a row, the maximum temperature record for a month of September in the Balearic Islands has been surpassed, following the 39.4 degrees recorded on Sunday in Petra and Sineu. According to him, this Tuesday "the new record could still be equaled or surpassed" in some parts of the north of Mallorca.

"The heat, however, is numbered," explains Guerrero. This Wednesday, the arrival of a cold front will displace the mass of warm air and cause a notable drop in temperature, while increasing instability.

The forecast points to locally strong or very strong downpours, accompanied by storms and the possibility of hail, while wind gusts from the north and northeast could exceed 70 km/h. The daytime temperature will drop moderately to significantly, putting an end to one of the most exceptional heat episodes experienced in the Islands in the month of September.
