The Balearic Islands break the demographic ceiling again and approach 1.25 million inhabitants
It is the second fastest growing region, second only to the Valencian Community
PalmThe population of the Balearic Islands reached 1,249,844 inhabitants on January 1, 2025, representing an increase of 18,076 people in one year, 1.5% higher than the national increase (1%), according to the first data from the 2025 Annual Population Census published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This increase places the archipelago as the second fastest-growing autonomous community, tied with the Community of Madrid and second only to the Valencian Community (2%). The Balearic Islands have 622,673 men and 613,910 women, according to the same source. Ibiza is the ninth municipality in Spain with the largest population increase in the last year, rising by 2.6% to 54,628 residents.
By island, Mallorca has reached 971,068 inhabitants, a 1.4% increase; Ibiza, 164,265, a 1.7% increase; Menorca has 102,821 inhabitants, representing a 1.7% increase; and Formentera, 11,690, a 1.8% increase. Of the 67 municipalities in the Balearic Islands, only Palma has more than 100,000 inhabitants. It has 443,196 registered residents, 1.1% more than last year. Only two other municipalities have more than 50,000 inhabitants: Ibiza (with 54,628) and Calvià with 54,082, a 0.4% increase in the last year.
The next most populated municipalities are Manacor with 49,275 inhabitants, Santa Eulària des Riu with 42,496, Llucmajor with 40,450, Marratxí with 40,434, Inca with 36,076, Ciutadella with 32,719, and Maó with 30,986. Of the 67 municipalities in the Balearic Islands, only six have experienced a population decrease: Banyalbufar has lost 2 residents and now has 578 (-0.3%), Escorca has decreased by 6, with 199 (-2.9%); Estellencs, by 5 and now has 374 (-1.4%), and the population of Mancor del Valle has decreased by 13 residents, to 1,691 (-0.8%); Porreres, in 20, up to 5,871 (-0.3%) and Sant Llorenç del Cardassar, 20, with 9,479 inhabitants (-0.2%).
28.6% foreigners
DOf the total population residing in the Balearic Islands, 891,424 were born in Spain (71.3%) and 358,320 were born abroad (28.6%). The countries of origin for the nationalities with the most residents in the Balearic Islands are Colombia, with 41,900; Argentina, with 38,485; and Morocco, with 34,243. These are followed by Germany, with 21,723; the United Kingdom, with 18,374; and Ecuador, with 18,012.
