The City Council will plant 35 new trees to replace the bellasombra trees in Llorenç Villalonga Square
To these 35 specimens we must add the 6 palm trees already existing in the square, so in total there will be 41 trees
PalmThe Palma City Council's renaturalization plan for Plaça Llorenç Villalonga calls for the replanting of 35 trees. This represents an increase of 10 trees compared to the square's original tree population. These 35 trees will be added to the 6 palm trees already existing in the square, bringing the total to 41 trees, according to the city's proposal. The pruning of the beautiful shade trees in December 2025 sparked a great deal of controversy, mainly due to complaints from neighbors..
The species are:
- 5 olive trees.
- 3 holm oaks.
- 2 coryzas.
- 11 mulberry trees.
- 7 red peppers from Brazil.
- 7 cypress trees.
- 6 palm trees (those that already exist).
Regarding the vegetation, Mediterranean and ornamental species selected for their low maintenance, climatic adaptation and ecological contribution will be incorporated:
- Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
- Sage (Salvia greggii).
- Kill (Pistacia lentiscus).
- Teuscribe (Teucrium fruticans).
- Stipa tenuisima.
- Margalida (Bellis perennis).
- Lindheime bee flower (Gaura lindheimeri).
- Tradescantia zebrina.
According to the City Council, the selection of these specimens improves the biodiversity of the surrounding area, increasing the number of tree species from a single one to six or eight shrub species. Furthermore, it creates a structural and functional diversification of the vegetation, promoting the presence of species adapted to the urban environment and addressing ecological, ornamental, and landscape considerations. The environmental performance of the plaza is also enhanced, taking into account factors such as shade, evapotranspiration, and providing refuge for beneficial insects.
Currently, work has been completed on the structural ground, which significantly facilitates the adaptation of trees in urban environments. Sources at the Palma City Council (Cort) emphasize that this municipal project is open to suggestions and contributions that improve the project and are technically feasible. For her part, the Councilor for Infrastructure, Belén Soto, along with municipal technicians, met this week with various neighborhood associations and organizations to explain the project in detail and invite them to participate by contributing their proposals.
