PalmaAlthough diversification is a utopia when talking about Mallorca's economic model, tourism promotion has indeed made it effective. Beyond sun and beach, the island's institutions talk about cultural tourism, sports tourism, gastronomic tourism, urban tourism... Now it is the turn of oleotourism, a concept that the Council of Mallorca wants to exploit through participation in the Oleotourism Spain project. The island institution announced today that the plenary session has approved the accession to the Spanish Association of Olive Tree Municipalities, the entity promoting Oleotourism Spain. Being part of this entity "allows the Council to advance in the process so that Mallorca becomes an oleotouristic destination and can be part of this state-wide network," the island institution stated through a press release.

The Council explains that the objective of Oleotourism Spain is to "convert the olive grove and oil production into a sustainable and quality tourism product." "The initiative values not only the oil, but everything that surrounds it: the producing areas, the unique olive landscapes, the olive mills, the gastronomy, the trades, and an olive culture rooted in the territory," continues the note from the island institution. "We have the product, we have the tradition, and we have the people who have kept this trade alive generation after generation," said the island Minister of the Presidency, Toni Fuster.

On the other hand, the statement highlights that "tourism also becomes an opportunity for farmers, producers, mills, and local businesses that keep the culture of oil alive". "We want tourism for Mallorca that leaves more value in our land," added Fuster, while also noting that "it is not about bringing more tourism, but about taking advantage of the tourism we already have so that they know and value what is ours". "May those who visit us know where our oil comes from, enter a mill, buy products from Mallorca, and discover the people and the landscape behind it," he stressed.

But oil producers like Miquel Coll point out that oleotourism activity is nothing new. "Many farms are already developing it. Perhaps on the Peninsula they need publicity, but that is not the case here," he notes, adding that "before all of this, the farms have many deficiencies and shortcomings in other areas".
