Council of Mallorca

The Council approves the first budgets without direct aid to the OCB and Youth for Language

The Pi, MÁS per Mallorca and the PSIB have presented three amendments in their entirety against the accounts of the island institution

The Council of Mallorca has given initial approval to the island institution's budget for 2026 without the earmarked aid in the Balearic Cultural Association (OCB) and Youth for the Language, with votes in favor from the PP and Vox parties. At the beginning of the legislative term, the far right had already announced its intention to eliminate these subsidies for organizations that fight for the protection and promotion of Catalan, and in the third year of its term, it has succeeded.

The far-right spokesperson in the island institution, Toni Gili, considered the elimination of these subsidies "the flagship measure" and added that the earmarked aid to the OCB, Youth for the Language, and the Booksellers' Guild "promotes separatism and confrontation." He also emphasized that the far right is not in the island institution to "endorse the left's linguistic continuity policies, but to change them."

The Pi, the PSIB, and MÁS per Mallorca have expressed their rejection of the accounts presented by the island institution's governing team. In fact, each party has presented a comprehensive amendment against the budget. For her part, the spokesperson for the PSIB, Catalina Cladera, described the budget proposal as "regressive, reactionary, and full of setbacks," and denounced that it "returns the Consell de Mallorca to the Munar era, with its musty, mothball-like atmosphere." Furthermore, Cladera denounced that, by eliminating the earmarked subsidies for the OCB and Jóvenes por la Llengua (Youth for the Language), the island institution is launching "a direct attack on the soul and identity of our people." Meanwhile, the spokesperson for El PI, Antoni Salas, considered the 2026 budget "spiritually impoverished." He also criticized the president of the island institution, Llorenç Galmés, for making a pact with "those who deny gender violence, climate change, and those who are bothered by our language." In her opinion, the Popular Party "has caved in" to the "enemies of Mallorca."

The spokesperson for MÁS per Mallorca in the Consell, Catalina Inés Perelló, lamented that the PP-Vox pact rejected the amendment in its entirety and all the partial amendments presented by the party. With the PP majority voting against all the proposals, Perelló denounced that "the Galmés government is once again imposing empty, continuationist budgets, completely conditioned by Vox's demands." For his part, the president of the institution, Llorenç Galmés, celebrated that the "highest budget in the Consell de Mallorca's history has been approved on time and in the proper manner."
