PalmaThe Consell d'Eivissa assured this Thursday that the pilot test to transfer the island's waste to Mallorca will have a "probably null" impact on traffic, noise, and other disturbances. According to the institution, the device foresees a maximum of seven trucks, five days a week, which will circulate at night.

The Consell has thus responded to the criticisms made by various groups, who have expressed concern about the effects of the initiative. In a statement, the institution has remarked that the test is covered by the modification of Law 8/2019 on waste and contaminated soils of the Balearic Islands, developed through Decree-Law 8/2025 on urgent measures to accelerate strategic projects.

As recalled, the new provision obliges the concessionaire of the public service, UTE Giref, to execute the pilot test. For this reason, the Council formalized the contract through a negotiated procedure without publicity. The contract will have an initial duration of three months, extendable in successive periods up to a maximum of two years.

The island institution has explained that the objective is to adjust the system to carry out the transfer "in the most efficient way possible" and to minimize externalities in both Ibiza and Mallorca.

Furthermore, it has denied that the waste is transported in bulk, as some entities have denounced. According to the Council, the environmental area of Ca na Putxa has the necessary machinery to package the bales of waste and control odors and insects.

Finally, the Council also denied that Ibiza is the island with the worst recycling figures in the Balearic Islands and assured that, during 2024, it surpassed Mallorca in selective collection.
