PalmGovernment spokesman Antoni Costa called for the protection of the civilian population and children in the Gaza Strip, but declined to explicitly describe the Israeli offensive as "genocide." Since the attack began, 60,000 Palestinians have died, of whom more than 18,500 are children and almost 9,800 are women. Costa made this point when asked about the more than 50 marches and rallies in support of Palestine that took place simultaneously last Thursday across virtually all of Mallorca. The spokesman expressed his "utmost respect for the freedom of citizens to mobilize for any cause they deem appropriate."

When asked directly about the Catalan government's position, Costa stated: "It's not up to us to say whether it's genocide or not. It's up to us to lament and not accept in any way that a situation like the one that's happening to children and the civilian population occurs." He added: "Words can be said one way or another. I think I'm expressing myself completely clearly."

"Lasting and secure" peace

The spokesperson recalled that the conflict was "triggered" by the attack carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023. "We understand that Israel defended itself from a terrorist attack," he asserted.

Regarding the Government's position on the conflict, Costa explained that it desires "a lasting and secure peace." "We believe that international law must be respected regarding the protection of the civilian population and children," he stated. He also called for the opening of humanitarian corridors to allow the population of Gaza access to aid. "We cannot accept situations like those the children are experiencing," he maintained.
