PalmThe owner of Medusa Beach, the Arenal establishment that collapsed in May of last year, killing four people and injuring fourteen, has been summoned to appear before Palma Court of Instruction No. 9 on November 11.
The summons, at the request of the defense, comes after two postponements. Initially set as March 26, it was later postponed to June, although it was also postponed. The Medusa Beach manager is charged with four counts of homicide and six counts of injuries, all due to gross negligence, and is free on precautionary measures.
The fatal collapse of the establishment, located on the Arenal beachfront, occurred at around 8:20 p.m. on May 23 of last year. Part of a terrace where customers and employees were gathered collapsed, plummeting from the first floor to the basement. The terrace belonged to another leisure establishment that was closed to the public at the time. The National Police Homicide Unit and Palma City Council technicians opened an investigation and determined that part of a roof that was attached to the establishment's terrace had collapsed, and for which a license was not held.
The structure had not been reinforced for this use, and as a result of the modifications, it had been overloaded with weight. This added weight, along with the weight of the people occupying the space at the time of the accident, caused the structure to collapse and sink. About a month later, on June 26, 2024, officers arrested the person responsible for Medusa Beach.
