The Platform in defense of the bellasombras welcomes Cort's opening of a dialogue, but calls for concrete commitments.
The organization made this statement following a meeting held last Tuesday with the Councillor for Infrastructure, Belén Soto.
PalmThe Platform in Defense of the Beautiful Shade Trees, made up of various neighborhood associations and environmental groups, has welcomed the Palma City Council's opening of a dialogue, although it has demanded "concrete commitments" and an "effective change" in its approach. Sources from the platform emphasized this point in reference to a meeting with the Councilor for Infrastructure, Accessibility, and Industrial Parks, Belén Soto, which took place last Tuesday following numerous requests from the organization. During the meeting, the City Council presented an initial replanting proposal, which the platform will now analyze and discuss, with the aim of reaching a consensus on a solution that will allow for the recovery of the environmental, social, landscape, and heritage value of the square after the felling of the water hyacinths.
However, the platform has pointed out that the City Council still hasn't presented the technical reports that justified the tree felling, although it assured them it would deliver them shortly. Sources from the platform considered this documentation "essential," since without these reports, and based solely on direct observations of the trees, they continue to maintain that the complete felling and the way it was carried out "was an unnecessarily radical measure." At the meeting, according to the organization, city officials acknowledged that the felling "could perhaps have been done differently." The organization considered the openness to dialogue and the willingness to discuss a replanting proposal a positive step, but stressed that this approach must translate into "concrete commitments, real access to the requested information, and an effective change in the way the municipal administration operates." Finally, they expressed their willingness to continue participating in future meetings and working groups, with the aim of developing a suitable project for Llorenç Vilallonga Square. They awaited the scheduling of a new meeting between the City Council and the residents and requested that a timetable for the construction work be established and that institutional communication channels be set up so that residents can monitor the progress.
