PalmThe PP mayors of the Balearic Islands have called this Friday for the suspension of the extraordinary regularization of migrants due to the impact that, as they claim, it is having on the town councils. They consider that the process has generated situations of collapse in municipal services from day one.

In a press conference, the mayor of Marratxí, Jaume Llompart, assured that the measure “is approved by the central government but falls on the shoulders of the town councils”, and warned that this puts the usual attention to citizens at risk. As he explained, the start of the process caused an “avalanche of people” in municipal offices and social services to obtain the vulnerability certificate necessary to regularize their situation.

This situation resulted in long queues, overwhelmed services and, in the words of the mayors, “chaos” in various municipalities. Some town councils, in fact, even tripled the number of calls in a single day.

Municipal officials have also criticized the lack of information from the Spanish Government. They denounce that there were no clear instructions on the first day and that this generated confusion among users, to the point that some people traveled between municipalities thinking they could process the certificate in any town hall.

Faced with this scenario, many town halls could only register applications and postpone the issuance of certificates, accumulating appointments for the coming days and affecting other services.

The mayors have framed this situation within the context of the demographic pressure experienced by the Islands, with a sustained increase in population and the arrival of people in irregular situations. As they recalled, in the last five years nearly 20,000 people have arrived and this year the figure has already grown by 20% compared to the previous year.

For all these reasons, Llompart has described the regularization as "unsustainable" and has called for its suspension due to "lack of foresight and planning". The mayors advocate for an "orderly migratory model adapted to the reality of the Islands" and urge the State to strengthen ordinary immigration mechanisms instead of promoting mass regularizations.
