The project by five young Mallorcan architects wins the competition to rehabilitate the Felanitx Union building
The project envisions the rehabilitation of the building to house a multifunctional space, with a center for cultural and artistic creation.
PalmThe 'Re[Vi]ure el Sindicat' project, developed by five young Mallorcan architects, has won the international competition to rehabilitate the historic Sindicat building in Felanitx. The jury of the Europan 18 competition announced the winning proposals for this year's edition on Monday, as reported by the Ministry of Housing, Territory and Mobility in a press release. For the rehabilitation of the Sindicat, a former cooperative winery, the Mallorcan architects Aina Perelló, Arnau Carbó, David Perelló, Francisca Gual, and Sergi Pérez were selected from among some thirty proposals.
The project envisions the rehabilitation of the building to house a multifunctional space, including a cultural and artistic center, an exhibition space dedicated to the building's history (such as a wine cellar), and a gastronomic laboratory showcasing local products, complete with a shop and restaurant. It also proposes the addition of cooperative housing and public housing for residents of Felanitx. The property is owned by the Consell de Mallorca (Island Council of Mallorca).
Connection with the urban fabric
The competition jury valued the proposal to connect natural and urban spaces using elements typical of the natural environment, such as replanting vegetation, restoring wildlife, activating water systems, and implementing crops, as well as the connection to the urban fabric of Felanitx. They also highlighted the uses the proposal envisions for restoring the building's regular, everyday activities, not just those related to museums or tourism, to achieve a balance between professionals, artists, regular users, and visitors. The restoration of the industrial building is conceived from a contemporary perspective, with new uses, while respecting the structure and its symbolic value. Thus, there will be spaces for artistic creation and screening rooms, in addition to other spaces for temporary exhibitions by artists. The fermentation halls, which house the large concrete wine presses, will serve as exhibition spaces showcasing the winery's past and will also include areas dedicated to museum displays explaining the winemaking process, as well as a conference room for various events. The side buildings will house the Local Gastronomy Laboratory, a shop, and a restaurant, all dedicated to showcasing and promoting products grown in the project's productive green spaces, as well as other local foods and wines linked to Mallorcan tradition and the project's connection to agricultural identity. In the olive mill area, the proposal includes a laboratory and training center focused on architectural materials. It also includes an area designated for cooperative housing, encompassing the construction of public housing for residents. An industrialized construction system is proposed for the creation of residential units and common spaces. The facades will be adapted to guarantee privacy and quality of life.
