Council of Mallorca

The PSOE demands negotiations to support the PP's car restriction law in Mallorca.

The Popular Party is not guaranteed Vox's votes under this rule.

PalmIf the People's Party (PP) of the Consell de Mallorca wants to obtain the support of the PSIB (Socialist Socialist Workers' Party) to push through the bill to limit rental cars on the island, "it will have to open a space for negotiation," warned the Socialist spokesperson in the island institution, Catalina Cladera. According to her, this space "has not yet been opened" and the PP has not discussed with the PSOE how to implement the limitation. As Cladera explained to ARA Baleares, the Consell's governing team and the technicians have met twice with all the parties they have representation in to "explain the technical criteria" of the regulation.

According to Cladera, the PP agreed with the PSOE that they would take the law to the Executive Council of the island institution (formed by the PP and Vox) and that they would subsequently open a period for public comment so that citizens and political parties could present objections. The socialist emphasizes that these objections should serve "for negotiation." "Negotiating means giving in on certain aspects, not just asking for support for a law and that's it," she clarifies. "They haven't done any of this," she laments.

The President of the Council, Lorenzo Galmés, has emphasized that they are continuing to negotiate the final proposal for the regulations with entities and companies in the sector, as well as with the parties they represent, with the aim of ensuring that "it is not just a proposal from one government team, but is applied in other legislatures."

For the moment, Vox, the PP's governing partner, is the party most opposed to the vehicle restrictions, to the point that it is currently unthinkable that the PP could count on their votes. Therefore, although Cladera assures that the Popular Party "has not done anything yet," she admits that they are "interested" in agreeing on the regulations with the PSIB.

For their part, sources from MÉS por Mallorca assure that they have not negotiated anything with the PP and do not specify the measures they will demand in exchange for supporting the regulations. Sources from the PI explain that, "in principle," they will support the initiative, but point out that "we must look at the fine print."
