The restaurant accused of overcharging a coat rack in Ibiza is now demanding 36,000 euros from the customer.
The establishment described the woman's social media posts as "false and defamatory."
PalmThe Japanese restaurant Wakame Ibiza has announced legal action against the customer who reported on social media about being charged €12 for using the coat rack. The establishment is demanding the removal of the posts, a public rectification, and compensation of €36,000 for damages, with the possibility of an increase if the negative effects persist.
The restaurant, represented by criminal lawyer Marina Corral, described the woman's social media posts as "false and defamatory" and asserted that they have caused "serious damage to its reputation and business." Last week, the customer claimed on social media that the establishment wanted to charge her 12 euros for using a purse hook after a waitress insisted she use it without informing her that it would cost money. The consumer association Facua quickly reported on the case.
The incident dates back to August 5th, when the customer had a drink at the establishment. During service, according to the restaurant, an "inadvertent error" occurred on the bill when an incorrect item was added, which was immediately corrected before payment, without causing any financial loss to the customer. However, days later the user shared a post on the social network X that for the restaurant represents "accusations of deceptive practices accompanied by a document different from the actual invoice."
The post was viewed more than 591,000 times, "which generated a strong media impact, a decrease in the restaurant's reservations and a wave of offensive comments and harassment against the staff," said the establishment, which also criticized the fact that it had been a deceased person who had become news. the discrediting of Wakame Ibiza and, by extension, the island's hospitality sector."
