The Spanish army watches three Russian navy ships in Mallorca
It is a corvette, a frigate and a Russian supply ship accompanying two merchant ships
PalmaA Spanish army maritime action ship escorted and monitored three Russian Navy vessels as they passed through the Mediterranean Sea, specifically off the coast of Mallorca. According to a statement released this Wednesday by the Defence Staff (Emead), the vessels were a Russian corvette, a frigate, and a supply ship, accompanying two merchant ships during their westward navigation of the Mediterranean.
The location and subsequent monitoring of the Russian units began south of Mallorca, coinciding with their entry into Spanish Exclusive Economic Zone waters. From there, the Spanish army ship continuously watched them during their transit through the Alboran Sea and crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar, ending the monitoring when the vessels reached the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone.
These actions of presence, surveillance, and deterrence are part of the permanent missions of the Navy aimed at ensuring maritime security, preserving freedom of navigation, and contributing to collective deterrence within NATO.
