PalmaThe University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) will incorporate in the 2026-2027 academic year the new degree in Marine Sciences, a qualification especially linked to the island reality and the management of the Balearic coastline. The new study will offer 35 places and will train professionals specialized in the study and management of marine and coastal environments from disciplines such as biology, geology, chemistry, physics, and technology.

The new qualification will be part of the renewal of the UIB's academic offering for next year, which will also incorporate the double degree in Mathematics and Physics and the degree in Agribusiness Sciences Engineering, in addition to three new master's degrees. The implementation of these studies will involve an investment of 5.5 million euros by the Ministry of Education and Universities until 2030. From that year onwards, the maintenance of the new studies will have an estimated annual cost of 1.54 million euros.

The degree in Marine Sciences will allow the training of specialists in areas related to marine and coastal ecosystems, with a curriculum that will combine various scientific disciplines. Students will address issues related to the functioning of the marine environment, the conservation and management of resources and the coastline. The creation of this qualification means incorporating into the public university of the Islands a training especially related to a territory where the sea has a central role both from an environmental and economic point of view.

Mathematics and Physics

The UIB will also launch a double degree in Mathematics and Physics, with ten places. The degree will prepare students to develop in fields such as teaching, research, consulting, quantitative analysis, emerging technologies, finance, health, and data modeling.

The planned investment for this double degree until the first cohort finishes, in 2031, is 475,976 euros. Subsequently, it will require an approximate annual expenditure of 204,059 euros. The third new degree will be the degree in Agricultural and Food Science Engineering, which will replace the current degree in Agricultural and Food Engineering and Rural Environment. The studies will maintain the own attributions of agricultural technical engineering and will reinforce contents related to genetic improvement of crops, sustainable technologies, management of water and energy resources, and agroecological systems.

New master's degrees

The UIB's offering will be completed with three new master's programs. One of them will be the master's in Study and Management of Terrestrial Ecosystems in the Face of Global Change, which will offer 25 places and will focus on the multidisciplinary study of Mediterranean ecosystems.

The Erasmus Mundus master's in Promotion of Health and Well-being Throughout Life will also be incorporated, taught jointly with universities in Portugal and Serbia. The program will be in-person, will last two academic years, and will offer 25 places. It is part of the Hygieia consortium, which has four million euros in funding from the European Union.

Finally, the UIB will update the master's in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling, coordinated by the Autonomous University of Madrid and in which 17 Spanish universities participate. The program, which is taught entirely in English, will incorporate content on artificial intelligence and molecular simulation, will be 60 credits, and will offer 40 places, two of which at the UIB. For the 2027-2028 academic year, the university also plans to incorporate the bachelor's degrees in Architecture and Mechanical Engineering with a mention in Nautical Engineering.
