The events date back to October of last year, when a group of hunters from Mallorca hired a dog transport company based in Catalonia to transport 36 dogs for a round trip from Palma to Lithuania for hunting purposes. However, 27 of the dogs died during the return sea voyage to Palma. Following these events, agents from the Civil Guard's Nature Protection Unit in Mallorca launched an investigation to clarify what happened and identify those responsible. According to the investigation, the animals died because the quality and quantity of air inside the vehicle was not maintained in a manner appropriate for the species and number of dogs being transported. Furthermore, no care was provided during the journey. The number of animals transported in the vehicle and their size generated a considerable amount of metabolic heat, humidity, and CO₂ inside the vehicle, which most of them could not withstand. The company owner and the driver, a 21-year-old man, are under investigation for an alleged crime against animals, specifically for the deaths of the dogs during the operation, dubbed Xólotl. The case has been submitted to the court.
