L'Atlàntida crowns 'Lionel' and honors Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat
The French composer, winner of two Oscars, receives the Master of Cinema award while Carlos Saiz's film wins the festival's main prize in a record-breaking edition, with 53,500 in-person spectators
PalmaThe film Lionel, by Carlos Saiz, has been the big winner of the 16th edition of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest, which this Sunday lowered the curtain after registering its most massive edition. The festival also honored the French composer Alexandre Desplat, winner of two Oscars and distinguished with the Master of Cinema award for a career that includes soundtracks such as The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shape of Water.
The jury of the National Official Section, made up of Pepa Charro, Javier Giner, Miguel Bernardeau and students Andrés Segura, Laia Oliva and Rosa Bisbal, has awarded the prize for best film to Lionel, a road movie halfway between fiction and documentary that portrays the difficult relationship between a father and a son. The story follows the journey of the two protagonists from Murcia to northern France to reunite with the protagonist's sister.
The Dama Agustí Villaronga Award for best national film has gone to Mala bèstia, Bàrbara Farré's debut film.
In the new Trends section, the jury has honored Blue Film, by Elliot Tuttle, starring Reed Birney and Kieron Moore, while the Audience Award has gone to the documentary El ciclo del amor, starring Emilie Kira and Pradyumna Kumar-Ann.
Regarding the Balearic competition, the jury composed of Biel Mesquida, Llum Barrera and Claire O'Keefe has awarded the prize for best film to La carn, by Joan Porcel. The award for best short film has gone to La barraca, by Júlia Castaño.
According to data provided by the organization, the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest has closed its most crowded edition, with 53,500 spectators at in-person activities, 500 accreditations, and a program featuring 160 titles from 22 nationalities.
The screenings and activities have been spread between Les Voltes, La Misericòrdia, Es Baluard Museu, CineCiutat, Sala Rívoli, Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró and, as a new feature this year, Hotel Victòria Gran Melià.
The festival director, Jaume Ripoll, has stated that this edition has represented "the great leap forward" for the event thanks to the increase in audience and the response obtained for the programming. "The duty of a festival is to be relevant to the industry and to the audience and this year, more than ever, we say goodbye with the feeling of a completed objective," he affirmed.
Within the framework of the Atlàntida Mallorca Talents Lab, the first prize has been awarded to La forma animal, the debut work by Sofía Esteve and Isa Luengo, which has received a package of distribution and development aid valued at 40,000 euros, in addition to the new Kinótico award.
The online edition of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest will remain available on Filmin until August 24. The award for the best online film in the Official RAW Section will be announced on August 14.
