PalmA social media user has explained why many Mallorcans speak Standard Catalan when living or chatting with Catalans. The reason, he explains, is because "if you chat in Mallorcan, it's impossible to go unnoticed."
At the beginning of the video, the young man explains that when he arrived in Barcelona, he was surprised to see that many Mallorcans spoke Standard Catalan, and he even criticized them for doing so. "When I arrived, I refused to change my accent, and when I saw people changing it, I thought: what sellouts."
Then, he explains, he felt "forced" to switch to speaking standard Catalan because, "if you want to have a simple life and blend in, it's impossible to achieve that by speaking Mallorcan." The young man claims that no matter who he speaks to, when they hear his accent, they'll say, "Oh, you're from the islands," and then tell him a story about someone they know who's been to the Balearic Islands. He adds, "Almost everyone talks to me about Menorca, even though I'm Mallorcan and have no connection to Menorca." "If you live in Barcelona and you're Mallorcan, you have to change your accent no matter what," he concludes.
