The Principal of Palma opens the new season with La Zaranda and 'Quiso negro'

PalmaThe Principal Theatre of Palma presented this Thursday the 2026/2027 season, a proposal marked by critical spirit, social commitment, and the presence of top-level creators and performers. The Board of Trustees of the Principal Theatre Foundation of Palma has unanimously approved the new programming from September 2026 to January 2027, which includes theatre, music, dance, family shows, and the 41st Opera Season.

The season will open on September 25 with the historic company La Zaranda, which will present Todos los ángeles alzaron el vuelo, a piece of high reflection and social criticism about the peripheries. Two days later, on September 27, the company Ester Guntín will inaugurate the dance season with Quiso negro, a visual spectacle that starts from the iconographic and symbolic universe of the ritual.

The theatrical programming will continue with the award-winning play The architect, by Josep R. Cerdà, presented within the framework of Fira B! on September 30. On October 1, it will arrive Cyrano, a co-production by the Teatre Principal with La Impaciència, based on Rostand's play. On October 2nd, it will be performed Bachata, a co-production by Principal with Ovnipresents, and on October 3rd, Delicate Words, by Minúcia Teatre de Menorca.

''The Picture of Dorian Gray'

On November 6, Casting Lear will arrive at the Teatre Principal, a proposal by Andrea Jiménez inspired by The King Lear, by William Shakespeare. On November 14, it will be the turn of The Picture of Dorian Gray, an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's work starring Àngels Gonyalons, one of the great successes of this year's edition of the Grec Festival of Barcelona.

The programming will continue on November 29 with Tot fent 'La bella Helena', Miquel Mas Fiol's particular contemporary revision based on Jacques Offenbach's work. This production marks the first coproduction of contemporary text theater in years between the Teatre Principal and the Teatre Lliure de Barcelona, and it can be seen in the Sala Gran.

Dinamarca, by Lluïsa Cunillé, performed by Pere Arquillué and Imma Colomer, will arrive at the Sala Gran on December 3. Two days later, on December 5, it will be the turn of The Threepenny Opera, the famous musical work by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, which will feature Coque Malla as the protagonist as a major attraction.

'This is not a romantic comedy'

On December 13, Las gratitudes, an adaptation of Delphine de Vigan's novel, starring Gloria Muñoz, will be performed. For its part, Això no és una comèdia romàntica, by Pau Pascual and Marina Nicolau, a co-production of the Teatre Principal and El Somni Produccions, can be seen on December 18, 19, and 20.

In 2027, on January 24, El jardín quemado, by Juan Mayorga, will arrive, with a cast led by Adriana Ozores and Miguel Hermoso. On January 28, it will be the turn of Acorar sense límits, by Toni Gomila, which revives one of the most emblematic shows of Balearic theatre of recent decades in a fully inclusive version.

The Sala Petita will consolidate itself, for another season, as a space dedicated to reflection, music, poetry, and local proposals. The theatre program will open on November 10 and 11 with Concierto de Amor y Muerte, by Pedro Casablanc, based on texts by Quevedo and Bécquer. On December 5, it will be the turn of Doce metros cuadrados de piel, by La Rueda Teatro Social, a documentary theatre proposal that offers six different perspectives on sexuality. On December 9, Litteros, by Miquel Brunet, will arrive, a show that fuses music, poetry, word, desire, and theatre. The season will be completed with training activities and various research proposals linked to the performing arts.

The Symphony Orchestra and Film Music

In the musical section, the popular concert by the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra dedicated to cinema will have a new edition on September 24. This year's Extraordinary Concert of Santa Cecilia (November 22) will be led by the Santanyí Music Band. The always anticipated Christmas Concert by the choirs of the Principal theatre will be on December 16 and 17. And the Chamber Orchestra of Mallorca, conducted by Bernat Quetglas, will celebrate its first ten years with a special concert on January 23.

The musical programming will also occupy a prominent place this season. On November 13, a new edition of the ME_MMIX Festival will take place, with Ensemble Phace and Nacho de Paz. The Jazz Voyeur Festival will stop at the Principal theatre on November 25, with the prestigious jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant and pianist Sullivan Fortner. On December 1, Germans Tanner, one of the historic bands of island pop-rock, will present the concert Infinitament.

The return of Jaume Anglada

On November 7, Jaume Anglada will return to the stage, after more than a year of forced hiatus. The musical programming will be completed on December 10 with the closing concert of the Alternatilla Festival, a unique performance that will bring together various musicians who have participated throughout the festival's ten editions.

Regarding dance, notable performances include, as already announced, Quiso negro, by Ester Guntín, on September 27, and the Laboratory of Balearic Dance Creators, with Idoia Zabaleta, on December 13.

Family programming

Family programming will once again play a relevant role during the season. The first proposals will be Tumbalafusta, by Xavier Bobés, Pau Matas and La Ruta 40, on October 10 and 11, and Niu, a new co-production by the Principal theater with Catalina Florit and Irene Soler specifically aimed at early childhood, on November 20 and 21. In January, on the 2nd and 3rd, Gota will arrive, by Txema Muñoz, a show awarded, among other recognitions, with the Max award and the FETEN award for the best street show. The programming for the little ones will be completed with a new edition of Opera for Babies, scheduled for March 2027.

41st Opera Season

The 41st Opera Season at the Teatre Principal maintains its commitment to an eclectic program that combines major repertoire titles with new proposals, without sacrificing the artistic rigor or international quality that characterize the cycle. The season will open with Charles Gounod's Faust, a production by the Opéra de Lille and the Opéra Comique of Paris, with staging by Denis Podalydès, which can be seen on October 28 and 30 and November 1. The second event will be the zarzuela La tabernera del puerto, by Pablo Sorozábal, with stage direction by Mario Gas and musical direction by Manuel Coves, in a production by the Teatro de la Zarzuela of Madrid, scheduled for January 8 and 10.

Baroque opera will arrive with Orlando furioso, the first title by Antonio Vivaldi to be part of the history of the Teatre Principal Opera Season, with performances on February 17, 19, and 21. The Easter Concert, under the direction of Carles Ponsetí, will take place on March 24.

The season will continue on April 28 with Arnold Schönberg's Pierrot Lunaire, a new co-production by the Teatre Principal. The cycle will conclude with Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly, starring the renowned soprano Erika Grimaldi, with four performances on June 14, 16, 18, and 20, 2027.

Practical information and season tickets

The Principal Theatre will maintain the same prices and subscription modalities in this new season. The sale of season tickets will begin on September 2nd and the sale of general tickets will open on September 5th. With this staggered calendar, the Principal Theatre aims to encourage viewer loyalty and allow subscribers to choose their seats with maximum convenience.
