The Cinema Lliure festival returns to the beaches of Mallorca with eight nights of films and short films
The cycle offers seven screenings, one each day for a week, when the sun sets, between 9:30 PM and 10 PM
PalmaCinema will once again invade the beaches of Mallorca this summer with a new edition of Cinema Lliure a la Platja, which this year celebrates its fifth anniversary on the island with a program marked by auteur cinema, original version screenings, and support for emerging Balearic talent. The cycle will take place between June 25 and July 2 in Pollença, Manacor, Alcúdia, and Palma, with free open-air sessions that will begin at sunset, between 9:30 PM and 10 PM. This edition's program focuses on the margins and invites the public to reflect on human relationships, identity, and the sense of belonging through the feature films Molt lluny, La llum de l’Aisha, La chica zurda, and La misteriosa mirada del flamenco.
As usual, the festival also reserves space for local cinema with the sections Talent+, Nou Talent, and, as a new feature this year, FILMETS Badalona Film Festival. In total, six short films linked to filmmakers from the Balearic Islands will be screened. Within Talent+, Eixam, by Eugenia Sampedro; En el nom de les flors, by Josep Alorda; and Les imatges arribaren a temps, by Jaume Carrió are included. The Nou Talent section will offer Arrange room, by Paula Sastre de la Dedicación and Laura Ferrer Vergara, and Correspondencias afásicas, by Sergi Nicolau, the latter with an external screening in Catalonia. In addition, FILMETS will arrive on Mallorca for the first time with the short film La Barraca, by the Mallorcan director Júlia Castaño.
Pollença will be in charge of inaugurating the cycle with two screenings on Tamarells beach in Port de Pollença. On Thursday, June 25, La llum de l’Aisha can be seen, while on Friday, June 26, it will be the turn of Molt lluny, winner of two Silver Biznagas at the Malaga festival 2025. The sessions will be preceded by the short films Arrange room and En el nom de les flors. The next stop will be Portocristo, in Manacor, with the screenings of La chica zurda and La misteriosa mirada del flamenco on June 27 and 28. In this case, the short films selected before each film will be Les imatges arribaren a temps and La Barraca. Cinema Lliure will also return to Alcúdia with a single session on Alcúdia beach, next to Balneari 6, where La llum de l’Aisha will be screened after the short film Arrange room. Palma, for its part, is recovering this year two nights of screenings on Fontanelles beach, next to Balneari 14. Molt lluny can be seen on July 1 and La llum de l’Aisha, on July 2.
One of the main novelties of this edition will be an environmental awareness action promoted jointly with the Maritime Museum of Mallorca and the Mallorca Preservation Foundation. Before the screening on July 2 in Fontanelles, a waste collection will be carried out on the beach with the participation of 30 volunteers, who will receive as a reward a guided tour of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca. With this initiative, the festival reinforces its commitment to sustainability and coastal preservation. The program was presented this Wednesday at the Maritime Museum of Mallorca with the participation of the director of Cinema Lliure, Juliana Spadano; the member of the production and programming team Paula Labazuy; the director of the Maritime Museum, Albert Forés, and the regional secretary of Culture and Sports, Pedro Vidal.
