PalmaEight out of ten teachers in the Balearic Islands who participated in a consultation promoted by the Independent, Autonomous and United Union (SIAU) are in favour of calling an indefinite strike in the education sector. According to the results of the survey made public this Monday by the union, 80.8% of participants support this option, while 11.7% oppose it and 7.5% state they do not have a defined position.

The consultation was launched on May 25 with the aim of knowing the teaching staff's opinion on the possibility of promoting sustained mobilization in the face of what the union considers an accumulation of problems affecting both the working conditions of teachers and the functioning of public education. To encourage participation, the questionnaire was sent to the management teams of the educational centers so that they could distribute it among the staff rooms.

In addition to the majority support for the strike, the consultation also asked about the most suitable calendar to start it. Among teachers who support the mobilization, 54.3% consider that the call should be made effective during the first trimester of the 2026-2027 academic year. On the other hand, 28.4% prefer it to start this June, while 17.3% do not take a position on the date.

The union interprets these results as a sign of the existing discontent within the teaching community. Among the reasons it cites are the linguistic policies promoted by the Government, the situation of interim teachers, the loss of purchasing power, the precariousness of some educational groups, and the increase in aggressions against teachers.

SIAU has also expressed support for the mobilizations taking place in other territories of the State in defense of public education and has condemned the aggressions recently suffered by various teachers. According to the union, these episodes highlight the need to strengthen the protection and social recognition of the profession.

After the consultation, the organization calls for the initiation of a process of debate and coordination in the educational centers of the Balearic Islands. In this regard, it proposes the calling of open assemblies during the coming months to define shared demands and study the necessary conditions to promote an indefinite strike from the next academic year.

The union argues that a mobilization of these characteristics can only prosper if it has broad participation from the teaching base and assures that it will continue to promote spaces for coordination and debate among the teachers of the Balearic Islands.
