The Department of Education will increase the presence of psychologists among secondary school students in Son Gotleu.
The measure aims to prevent school dropout and improve coexistence in the neighborhood's high schools during the 2025-2026 school year.
PalmThe Ministry of Education and Universities will increase the presence of psychologists in secondary schools in the Son Gotleu neighborhood of Palma this academic year. Minister Antoni Vera announced this measure on Monday after chairing the meeting of the Son Gotleu Educational Plan committee for the 2025-2026 academic year. During the meeting, participants outlined the needs of the neighborhood's schools. Vera stated that the Ministry will increase support for schools in the area and that, starting this 2025-2026 academic year, psychological support will be strengthened with the addition of more general health psychologists to the public secondary schools. The main objective is to reduce school dropout rates. Additionally, the intervention of staff from the Comprehensive School Safety Plan (PISE) will be expanded at the Joan Capó and Es Pont schools to address current needs. The meeting also addressed the neighborhood's issues of coexistence. The regional minister insisted that the priority is to guarantee safe educational spaces both inside and outside of schools.
Furthermore, Vera explained that, in coordination with the Palma City Council, the Local Police, the National Police, and the Consell de Mallorca (responsible for assisting homeless people), the process will begin to make the street leading to the IES Josep Sureda i Blanes school one-way towards Joanot Colom Park, a measure intended to improve traffic flow. It was also agreed that EMAYA (the municipal waste management company) will expedite the cleaning of the streets around the school and complete it before 8:00 a.m.
Open Courtyards
In parallel, work will continue to open primary school playgrounds outside of school hours, and summer activities and extracurricular leisure programs for young people will be promoted. This is the third meeting of the commission in the current legislative term, with the aim of strengthening coordination between administrations and promoting actions that respond to the educational needs of children, adolescents, and families in Son Gotleu. The plan promotes initiatives aimed at fostering the academic, social, and personal success of students, improving school conditions and educational quality, and strengthening spaces for coexistence.
