More than 2,300 signatures to protect the Son Bonet Green Lung from the advance of the mega photovoltaic park
The citizens' platform regrets the lack of response from the Government and the Marratxí City Council while AENA's project continues to advance at the state level
MarratxíThe Son Bonet Pulmón Verde (Son Bonet Green Lung) platform has collected more than 2,300 signatures in defense of protecting the public space of Son Bonet, in a further demonstration of citizen rejection of the photovoltaic mega-park project promoted by AENA (the Spanish airport authority). The petition, launched a few months ago both digitally and in person, has garnered nearly a thousand signatures through the Change.org platform and more than 1,200 signatures collected in the streets and squares of the municipality. This figure adds to the more than 1,200 objections already submitted against the declaration of the project as being of strategic industrial interest. Despite this sustained citizen support, the platform denounces a complete lack of institutional response. They assert that, after more than two months of requesting meetings, they have still not been received by the President of the Balearic Government, Margalida Prohens. They also don't hide their displeasure with the attitude of the mayor of Marratxí, Jaume Llompart, whom they accuse of avoiding clear explanations about the project's true status and the steps taken by the authorities.
Since Prohens joined the government in July 2023, when the environmental impact statement was shelved, the platform asserts that there has been no visible progress in the institutional defense of the Son Bonet Public Open Space. At the same time, they denounce that AENA (the Spanish airport authority) has continued to solidify the project's economic and administrative viability. In this regard, they point out that the photovoltaic mega-park is awaiting approval of the DORA (the airport regulation and investment document) by the Council of Ministers. They consider this a crucial step, as it would open the door to further processing of the project at the regional, island, and municipal levels. The platform asserts that it has repeatedly proposed an alternative: the creation of an urban forest in Son Bonet, promoted by the Marratxí City Council, as a project compatible with the energy transition and the preservation of public space. They denounce that this proposal has not progressed beyond declarations of intent. Son Bonet Pulmó Verd interprets the institutional silence as a strategy of political inaction, confident that the project will eventually collapse under its own administrative weight. They consider this attitude particularly contradictory in a government that has opposed initiatives from the central government on other occasions, but which, in this case, has not made any visible move against a project promoted by a state-owned company. Given this situation, the platform urgently requests a meeting with the President of the Balearic Government and a direct meeting with AENA officials, in light of what they describe as the ineffectiveness of the Balearic Islands administrations.
