Unions will authorize the psychological study of Miquel Roldán
The teacher, convicted of child abuse, has a position at the Maria Antònia Salvà Primary School, where families refuse to send their children.
The Joint Committee between the Administration and the unions will authorize Miquel Roldán, a teacher convicted of bullying minors, to undergo a psychological evaluation to determine whether he is fit to be around children. According to ARA Baleares, the majority of the unions will vote in favor, which, combined with the seven votes from the Administration, will endorse the measure. A panel discussion was held in February, but ended in a deadlock, with seven votes in favor, five abstentions, and two against. There was an absolute majority to take a binding measure.
The unions' decision marks a new chapter in the crisis that began at the start of the school year at the Maria Antònia Salvà Primary School, where families have refused to send their children to class while Roldán remains in the classroom. According to reports, the teacher had problems with students at the school years ago, as well as with children from the Gabriel Janera Primary School and Manila Primary School, where he met the victim who filed a complaint against him.
This Tuesday, the families of the CEIP MA Salvá in Palma held a silent demonstration to demonstrate their opposition to Miquel Roldán teaching at their children's school, and to demand that the Ministry of Education and the Catalan Government take immediate and precautionary measures to ensure that the school's teacher does not teach or have any contact with them.
Pending judicial measures
On Wednesday, Carmen López, the lawyer representing the AFA, met with the legal services of the Ministry of Education to seek a favorable solution. At the meeting, the families complained, the heads of the Ministry's departments reported that they have no record of any disciplinary proceedings and that they only have written documents filed in a file. "This news surprises us, since we know they have sufficient information to act immediately," they lamented.
The Federation of Families of Mallorca (FAPA Mallorca) has expressed its support for the educational community at the Maria Antònia Salvà Primary School in their fight to have Miquel Roldán, a teacher convicted of bullying minors, removed from teaching. "We reject the idea that a person convicted of bullying a former student, a minor, should continue teaching and having contact with students. Last year, the problem erupted at the Gabriel Janer Manila Primary School when this teacher applied for a place at the school, where he had initiated contact with the student he ultimately bullied, and for which he was convicted." FAPA Mallorca has already expressed its support for the demands made to the Ministry of Education and stated that this was not a problem at any specific school. Permanent solutions had to be found, or we would have the problem every school year, as has been the case," the organization explained.
