ManacorMiquel Oliver Gomila (Més-Esquerra) will cease to be mayor of Manacor this Thursday, after more than seven years at the head of the City Council, to prepare his candidacy for the presidency of the Council of Mallorca in the May 2027 elections. The current Councillor for Culture, Ferran Montero, will replace him. Oliver, who has been a councillor for 17 years, will remain at the City Council and will take on the Culture area with a part-time commitment.
"I cannot be everywhere", explained Oliver at this Tuesday's press conference, in which he announced his resignation and confirmed the replacement, after weeks of rumors. The mayor has defended that the decision is well-considered and will allow him to face new political responsibilities without compromising the dedication required by the mayoralty. "I am not leaving Manacor. I am not leaving the City Council and, of course, I am not leaving politics. What I am doing is closing one chapter and opening another", he stated. He also assured, in response to a question from journalists, that the change in commitment will mean savings for the municipal treasury.
The City Council has called two consecutive extraordinary plenary sessions for this Thursday, October 8, starting at 7:00 PM. In the first, Oliver's resignation will be made effective and, subsequently, the election of the new mayor will proceed. Montero was also present at the appearance.
An "orderly" replacement
Oliver has defended that he is leaving a team prepared to provide continuity to the municipal project. "The succession is accompanied by a strong and cohesive team. Ferran is not arriving just now, he knows the City Council and the municipality and he is prepared," he assured.
The mayor has insisted that the fact of assuming both responsibilities with full dedication would prevent him from attending to them as he considers necessary and would affect his personal life. "My decision is good for Manacor and allows for an orderly succession," he stated.
In the balance of the more than seven years of his term, he recalled the difficulties of the pandemic and acknowledged both the successes and the errors and the pending projects. "We have done many things, we have unblocked some that seemed impossible, we have made mistakes and some things have also been left to do. Everything, within an Administration that does not always advance at the speed we would like," he said.
"I have had the immense privilege of being the mayor of my town, one of the greatest responsibilities one can have. You are never finished, Manacor is immense," he added before thanking the people of Més-Esquerra for their support during these years.
The support of Més-Esquerra
The executive of Més-Esquerra of Manacor has communicated the decision to the members by letter. The party defines it as a "thought-out, personal and political" decision and maintains that Oliver considers that he cannot now dedicate to the mayoralty all the time that the position demands.
The party vindicates Oliver's role in the political transformation of the municipality during the last decade and in the consolidation of Més-Esquerra as the main municipal force. "Surely, one of the best demonstrations of the strength of a project is knowing how to make changes when the time is right," notes the executive.
"Responsibilities change and leaderships are renewed, but the project continues," concludes the letter.
