Manacor

Manacor claims to be a capital city for having five million euros annually and providing better services.

The motion was presented this Thursday and will be debated in the plenary session next Monday, July 14.

PalmManacor will demand the declaration of special capital status for the city and the Levante region, with the aim of ensuring fair financing and recognizing its role as the territorial capital and socioeconomic driver of the area. This model is similar to that of Palma and Ibiza, protected by Law 20/2006, which already includes special regimes for municipalities with supra-municipal functions.

Manacor currently generates a gross added value (GVA) of more than €1.1 billion, equivalent to 4% of Mallorca's total, while the region as a whole contributes €2.391 billion, 8% of the Balearic GVA, with key sectors such as hospitality, construction, commerce, and health-related activities.

Mayor Miquel Oliver has argued that Manacor, as the second largest municipality in Mallorca, assumes supra-municipal functions every day in areas such as healthcare, education, justice, culture, commerce, and logistics, "but these services are not compensated by current funding systems." Therefore, he has called for a capital fund to provide resources to maintain and improve the services provided throughout the region. "We are not asking for any privileges, but rather fair treatment," he asserted.

The municipal motion, presented today by Oliver and councilors Núria Hinojosa (PSOE) and Antònia Llodrà (AIPC), will be debated at the plenary session next Monday, July 14. The first deputy mayor, Núria Hinojosa, explained that Manacor is approaching 50,000 inhabitants, while the Levante region has more than 90,000. This figure increases by up to 140% during the summer due to the changing population, which "generates enormous pressure on essential services and municipal resources."

5 million annually

Antònia Llodrà stressed the importance of moving toward a more decentralized and balanced territorial model. Manacor is already the natural capital of the Levant, with a powerful educational and cultural network, a regional hospital, sports facilities, and a consolidated commercial and industrial infrastructure. But to sustain these services, we need resources to coordinate policies, establish fund criteria, and evaluate shared services.

The capital city fund would have an initial allocation of five million euros per year, 70% of which would be contributed by the Balearic Islands Government and 30% by the Mallorca Council, with reviews every five years based on criteria such as demographic growth for Manacor and the Levant, which should allow us to improve the quality of life, guarantee a balanced territorial model, and obtain the fair funding we deserve. "Capital status is not just a historical demand, it is a commitment to the future."
