PP and Vox agree to eliminate the Catalan language requirement for teachers in hard-to-fill positions
They will introduce various linguistic measures through the law on accelerating strategic projects.
PalmThe PP and Vox have agreed to eliminate the Catalan language requirement for teaching positions in areas with very limited staffing through the law on accelerating strategic projects. They will also eliminate the requirement for various basic job categories in the civil service, such as caretakers, assistants, cleaning staff, and maintenance workers. Furthermore, they have agreed to lower the required Catalan language grade in secondary school to obtain the Catalan certificate (B2 and C1), and to allow those who study abroad for a year to also obtain it.
The Vox spokesperson in the Catalan Parliament, Manuela Cañadas, announced the agreement, which she said was reached "after lengthy meetings and negotiations." The PP's deputy spokesperson, Marga Duran, noted that this agreement had already been reached in exchange for the budget, but until now it had not been formalized through any legislation. Furthermore, she conditioned her support for these changes, which Vox will present through amendments, on the final text being released.
"Nothing is being eliminated," Durán said. "It was agreed that for those competitive examinations for positions in very hard-to-fill roles, the Catalan language requirement must be demonstrated afterward, within a certain timeframe." "The left already had to do this in the healthcare sector," he argued. "The aim is to fill all the very hard-to-fill positions in places like Ibiza and Formentera and lower the required level or make exceptions for those positions or categories where, by their nature, the Catalan requirement is not necessary, provided they are not public-facing," he explained. In the current academic year, there are 877 positions in very hard-to-fill locations: 4 in Mallorca, 138 in Menorca, 549 in Ibiza, and 186 in Formentera. Regarding lowering the required grade for students to access a B2 or C1 level of Catalan, he said that it is a matter of adapting the regulations to what is required in Europe and Catalonia.
