Prohens highlights the "defeat" of "Sanchismo" in Extremadura and ignores the rise of Vox
The president of the Canary Islands congratulated María Guardiola, who called early elections due to the impossibility of passing the budget.
PalmThe Extremadura elections served as the first test of the new electoral cycle and provided a gauge of the various parties' prospects. The Balearic Islands' president, Marga Prohens, applauded the victory of the PP candidate, María Guardiola, who gained one seat compared to 2023, but fell short of an absolute majority. "An undeniable defeat for Sánchez's policies," said the Balearic leader, who conveniently omitted from her message the significant increase in Vox's representation, which rose from 5 seats to 11 and will further complicate governance.
"My congratulations to María Guardiola on her election victory, for increasing confidence in her project for change, for winning more votes than the entire left, and for making the PP of Extremadura the majority party," the president said in a tweet. Guardiola called the elections at the end of October due to the impossibility of reaching an agreement with Vox to approve the regional budget and carry out legislative initiatives. The resulting political landscape shows the PP allied with Vox, the PSOE weakened by the decline of the Spanish government and the recent corruption cases—dropping from 28 seats in 2023 to 18—and the far right surging. Meanwhile, Unidas por Extremadura improved its previous results, increasing its representation from 4 to 7 seats.
