Prohens, in a letter, demands that Sánchez deploy Frontex "with all necessary means."
"Activating Frontex means having it on the islands, not a plane in Malaga," says government spokesman Antoni Costa.
PalmPresident Marga Prohens will formally request, by letter, that the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, demand that the European Union deploy the European Border Protection Agency (Frontex) to the islands with "all necessary means." This announcement was made this Friday by the spokesperson for the Spanish Government, Antoni Costa, following the controversy that has erupted in recent days. While the Spanish government representative, Alfonso Rodríguez, and the Ministry of the Interior asserted that Frontex is already intervening on the migratory route in the islands, a representative of the agency denied this.
"Activating Frontex means having it on the islands, not a plane in Malaga," Costa argued, in statements reported by Europa Press. In this regard, he told Rodríguez that, "if he doesn't want to collaborate in the massive arrival of small boats, at least he shouldn't cause any more problems." After President Prohens advocated in a meeting with the European Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, for the activation of the European Border Guard in the Archipelago, Rodríguez insisted that he had already been paying special attention to the islands since early 2025, something the organization later denied. As a result, the PP has demanded explanations from the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
This year, 335 small boats have arrived in the islands with 6,196 people on board. 75% more than in the equivalent period of 2024. Costa also said he was unaware of the details of the procedure opened by the Prosecutor's Office to address Algeria's request to repatriate seven minor immigrants who arrived alone in Ibiza last September. This is an exceptional process, given that the islands host 298 children and adolescents of the same nationality who have not been claimed. "We cannot view anything that involves returning the minors to their parents negatively," he said.
