PalmaThe DANA Adam hits Mallorca with force this Monday at noon, with intense rainfall in Palma on a day marked by the suspension of classes and the red alert from Civil Protection. Aemet has extended the orange warnings for part of the island until 2:00 PM, given the possibility of precipitation of up to 40 liters per m2 in one hour.

The latest report from the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre, closed at 12:00 PM, accounts for 27 incidents in Mallorca since 10:00 PM on Saturday. The situation remains under surveillance and the Government asks not to let our guard down: after a relative truce during the afternoon, the forecast indicates that the rains will intensify again this evening and during the early hours of Tuesday.

Queues of up to six kilometers on the access roads to Palma

Intense rainfall is causing kilometer-long traffic jams on the Via de Cintura and the access roads to Palma. According to sources from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) consulted by Europa Press, the merge onto the Via de Cintura from the Andratx motorway is experiencing six kilometers of tailbacks. On the same Via de Cintura, between Son Rapinya and the Estadi Balear, traffic jams reach four kilometers, while on the Llucmajor road they are about three.

The DGT points out that there is a high volume of traffic on the access roads from Andratx, Inca, and Llucmajor and on the Via de Cintura. For the moment, no other incidents have been recorded beyond the traffic jams, which it attributes to drivers reducing their speed due to the rain.

In Calvià, the City Council has warned of traffic difficulties in La Romana in Peguera, Son Ferrer, the Santa Ponça roundabout, Ramon de Montcada street, and the Marineland roundabout. The City Council is also monitoring the flood-prone areas of Palmanova and Magaluf and has mobilized Local Police and Civil Protection personnel. It asks people to avoid unnecessary travel and to exercise extreme caution.

Accumulated water: 39 liters in ses Salines

The records available before the midday rainfall placed the most significant accumulations in Mallorca in the south and southeast. According to Aemet data collected by EFE, in the 24 hours until 8:00 a.m. this Monday, 34 liters per m2 had been measured in both Campos and ses Salines, 28 in Santanyí and 24 in Portocolom. These amounts correspond to that period and do not include subsequent precipitation.

In the update provided at this morning's Emergency monitoring meeting, Aemet has raised the record for ses Salines to 39 litres per m2, the maximum in Mallorca reported at the meeting.

During the early hours, the most intense nuclei had discharged mainly over the sea, to the south of the island. The President of the Government, Marga Prohens, explained that in this area, rainfall of 90 litres per m2 has been recorded. This figure corresponds to the rainfall over the sea, not an accumulation measured in any Mallorcan municipality.

Fallen trees and an intervention due to risk of collapse

The specific night count, between 10:00 p.m. on Sunday and 6:30 a.m. on Monday, includes two fallen trees and a preventive intervention due to the risk of a building collapse in Mallorca, according to information from the Government collected by EFE. These three actions are part of the balance prior to the midday update. The information released does not specify where they occurred.

The 12:00 p.m. balance raises the number of incidents in the Balearic Islands to 201: 113 in Ibiza, 59 in Formentera, 27 in Mallorca, and 2 in Menorca. The Military Emergency Unit arrived this morning in Mallorca to reinforce the preventive and response device.

Suspended classes and preventive closures in Palma

The storm has disrupted daily activity with the suspension of classes in Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. The Government has also authorized remote work for employees of the autonomous Administration who can perform their duties from a distance.

In Mallorca, the Council has suspended the activities of the centers for the promotion of personal autonomy, the day centers it manages, and the Comprehensive Home Care Service. Activities of other government social services have also been canceled.

In Palma, the municipal plan provides for keeping the Ribera and Can Terrers parks closed until 7:00 p.m. For the Sagrera promenade and Bellver park, the announced closure extends until 2:00 p.m. These are preventive measures provided for in the Municipal Territorial Emergency Plan.

The risk will continue throughout the night

The midday weather update maintains the possibility of accumulations of up to 100 litres per m2 in 12 hours in the areas with an orange warning. Subsequently, the warnings will change to yellow and will remain in effect until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, with the possibility of precipitation of 30 litres in one hour. The storms could also be accompanied by very strong wind gusts, especially during Monday night and Tuesday early morning.

The reduction of weather warnings does not imply the deactivation of the Civil Protection alert. The Government maintains the red level of the Meteobal Plan in Mallorca and operational situation 2 of the Inunbal Plan, because it also takes into account the conditions of the territory and the risk to the population.

Overflows and closed roads in Ibiza

The most serious impacts reported during the morning are concentrated in Ibiza. Emergency services have reported overflowing streams in Santa Eulària and Sant Joan and three roads cut off in the Cala area. The Director General of Emergencies, Pablo Gárriz, has asked people to avoid travel and not to attempt to cross streams, and has warned that the precipitation centers could also end up affecting Mallorca.

Given the persistence of the instability, the authorities recommend avoiding non-essential travel and outdoor activities and following updates from official channels.
