PalmaThe DANA Adam has forced the suspension of face-to-face activity for various services in the Balearic Islands this Monday, October 19. Classes are suspended in Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, while the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has cancelled face-to-face academic and administrative activities on all islands. Several day centers and municipal facilities are also closing, and the Palma City Council has restricted access to parks and public spaces.
The measures have been adopted to reduce travel and protect the population in the face of the risk of heavy rainfall and flooding. The situation may evolve throughout the day, so it is advisable to consult official channels before traveling.
Schools: classes suspended on three islands
There is no in-person teaching activity this Monday at educational centers in Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. The suspension affects all educational centers and the teaching activities scheduled for the day.
In Menorca, however, classes are continuing as normal. The Department of Education has asked families to follow communications from the centers through the GESTIB platform and the Government's official channels.
The UIB is suspending in-person activity on all islands
The University of the Balearic Islands has suspended face-to-face academic and administrative activities this Monday on all the islands, including Menorca. The decision affects the university campuses and has been taken due to the meteorological situation and the risk associated with travel.
Day centers and social services
The Department of Families, Social Welfare and Dependency Care has suspended the activity of the five day centers of Son Güells, Son Tugores, Can Blai, Sa Serra and Can Raspalls, as well as the Sa Riera occupational center, in Palma.
However, the day center service is maintained for people residing in the centers indicated by the Government and in Son Llebre, as well as the services for residents of the centers of the Foundation for Dependency Care and Support and Promotion of Personal Autonomy of the Balearic Islands.
In Mallorca, the Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS) has suspended the activities of the Personal Autonomy Promotion Centers, the day centers it manages and the Integral Home Care Service (SAID). The daytime services of care centers for people with disabilities with places contracted with the IMAS also remain closed.
The in-person registry of the IMAS is closed, but the electronic registry remains operational.
Libraries
The Council of Mallorca has also announced the closure to the public this Monday of the La Misericòrdia Cultural Centre, the libraries and the museums it manages.
Palma: municipal parks and facilities closed
Palma City Council has ordered the preventive closure of municipal parks and gardens and the Passeig de Sagrera. Municipal facilities also remain closed this Monday and citizen service offices are not offering in-person assistance, so procedures must be carried out telematically.
The closure of green spaces is not uniform: the Ribera and Can Terrers parks are scheduled to remain closed until 7 p.m. on Monday, while access restrictions to the Passeig de Sagrera and Bellver park had been set until 2 p.m. Municipal notices should be checked to confirm if these schedules have been modified.
Sports activities and events scheduled outdoors have also been suspended. The Germans Escales sports center has been set up as a shelter for people preventively evicted from settlements located in flood-prone areas.
EMT reduces frequencies
The Palma Municipal Transport Company (EMT) has announced a reduction in bus frequencies this Monday for safety reasons. A general suspension of service has not been announced.
Users should consult EMT's official channels before leaving to check for frequencies and possible disruptions to lines.
Is it possible to go to work?
The suspension of classes does not imply that a general day off has been decreed for workers. The Government has denied the messages announcing the general suspension of the workday.
For public employees of the autonomous Administration, teleworking has been prioritized when functions and available means allow it. Workers who cannot work remotely must follow the instructions of their managers, and essential services must continue to operate.
In the case of other workers, the situation must be evaluated according to the specific circumstances and labor regulations. The suspension of classes, in itself, does not entail the cancellation of the workday.
Recommendations regarding the rainfall
The authorities ask to avoid unnecessary travel, not to cross flooded streams or roads, and to stay away from areas susceptible to flooding. They also recommend checking official warnings before leaving home, especially in areas where rainfall may cause water accumulation.
In case of emergency, call 112.
