The government has not specified any measures to curb the price increases caused by the war.
The left criticizes Prohens for not canceling her trip to the Caribbean
PalmThe word 'Caribbean' was heard repeatedly this Tuesday during the parliamentary question time, in which the left criticized the absence of the president, Marga Prohens, who is on an official trip to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Iago Negueruela (PSIB) emphasized this point in particular, given the soaring prices caused by the war in the Middle East. After meeting with representatives from various sectors, the Catalan government has yet to specify any measures to address the situation, and the first vice president, Antoni Costa, has requested more time.
"Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, and the government's first decree to address it was approved on March 30, 2022," Costa argued in response to a question from Més per Menorca. "We have begun a series of meetings with social partners and all economic sectors," he said. "It's too early to talk about measures; what's needed is to listen to all sectors to get a clear picture that will allow us to act precisely." As he stated on Monday, he also insisted that they will not promote any measures until "first the European Union and then the Spanish government" do so.
Costa had to answer similar questions from the PSIB, Más per Mallorca, and Més per Menorca, who accused the government of being late in taking measures to stop the impact of the war in Iran. The First Vice President insisted that the round of meetings will continue this week. Nevertheless, the opposition seized upon Prohens' absence and reminded Costa that fuel prices and the cost of groceries had also risen.
"When everything goes up, Prohens goes to the Caribbean," criticized Negueruela, who pointed out that gasoline is already at €1.82 per liter. For his part, Ferran Rosa (MÁS) condemned the inaction of the councilors responsible for energy, agriculture, and business, and demanded "bold measures to accelerate the energy transition" so that farmers and business owners "stop trembling every time gas and oil prices rise." Meanwhile, Josep Castells (Más per Menorca) accused Costa of "beating around the bush" and responding with platitudes like "analyzing, monitoring, and considering scenarios" instead of implementing concrete measures. Costa considered it a "disgrace" that the left is seeking "an artificial confrontation" with the government over the war. He insisted that Prohens "is working on her agenda as president," and criticized the PSIB for the fact that the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez, was in Palma on Monday "holding a party press conference" instead of "acting as Secretary of State."
