PalmVice President and Government Spokesperson Antoni Costa responded this Friday to the Canary Islands government saying that, with the appeal against the distribution of migrant minors from the Canary Islands and Ceuta, the government is not seeking to halt the entire procedure, but only the entry of minors into the Balearic Islands. "The government's only intention is to prevent these minors from reaching the islands, because the situation they will experience is not dignified; we already have overcrowding," he said, emphasizing that the appeal is not "coordinated" with other regions.

Costa made these statements after Octavio Caraballo, the deputy minister in the Cabinet of the President of the Canary Islands, considered the appeals the islands will file before the Supreme Court (SC) to be "unsupportive." "We understand the dramatic situation the Canary Islands have been experiencing for quite some time," Costa explained. "The government wants to do everything possible to ensure the islands do not become like the Canary Islands." In this regard, he criticized the fact that Catalonia and the Basque Country have been exempted from the distribution.

"The minister should review the definition of racism."

In the same vein, Costa attacked the Minister of Youth and Children, Sira Rego, for calling the Balearic Government "racist." "It's surprising that a minister who isn't concerned at all about the situation of migrant minors who arrive directly on our shores, or who wants to distribute them and doesn't care about the conditions of the children being sheltered, accuses anyone of being racist," he retorted. "The minister should look at the definition of racism and apply it to herself," he concluded.
