PalmaPedro Bestard defended himself this Thursday against criticism from the PSIB for the transfer of waste from Ibiza to Mallorca, assuring on repeated occasions that "it is waste, not excrement" and insisting that the pilot test will have no impact on Mallorca. The second vice-president and Minister of Environment of the Consell de Mallorca had a tense confrontation with the socialist deputy Juana María Adrover during the plenary session of the insular institution.
The socialist has accused the governing team of having maintained "absolute obscurantism" around the project and has denounced that the PSIB has been "asking for information to which it is entitled for more than a year", but that it has had to find out about it "through the Consell d'Eivissa and the media". She also spoke of an "intentionality of constant deception" by the island government.
Adrover also accused the Consell of hiding information about the project and recalled that on July 2, the boat that is to transport the waste was already in Ibiza, while Bestard assured that she could not yet specify dates. The vice-president of Vox has downplayed this criticism and replied that "the boat can be in Ibiza, in Italy or in the United States, I don't care; until the 16th it does not make its first trip", insisting that the transfer will not begin until the planned date.

The socialist deputy also questioned Bestard's announcement, who will personally oversee the first shipment of waste. "How will you supervise, Mr. Bestard? You are a political appointee, not an expert," she retorted.
The minister replied that the project will have a specific monitoring protocol and that all effects of the pilot project will be reviewed. Furthermore, he assured that "if the trucks are not in condition, they will not board the ship."
During the debate, Bestard also once again attacked the statements of the former president of the Council and current socialist spokesperson, Catalina Cladera, who had described the waste from Ibiza as "shit." "It is a two-year pilot project and they are guaranteed; they are not shit. Because Mrs. Catalina Cladera said they were shit. In Ibiza they are waste and in Mallorca they are shit, and that is a disgrace and a lack of respect for the people of Ibiza," he stated.
The vice president insisted that the logistical impact will be minimal. As he recalled, seven trucks will arrive daily from Ibiza, while approximately 780 normally enter the Son Reus plant. "It's like if six or seven more cars passed by your house every day; no one would notice," he assured.
The pilot project foresees the transfer of waste from Ibiza to Mallorca for two years to be treated at the Son Reus plant, an initiative that has generated strong political and social controversy in recent weeks. The Council defends that the operation is manageable and will reduce the waste tariff, while the PSIB and other sectors criticize the lack of information and question the necessity of the project.
