CostitxAntoni Salas will leave the mayoralty of Costitx after 20 years at the head of the City Council. The mayor has registered his resignation and the decision will be ratified next Friday in an extraordinary plenary session called at 7 p.m. Salas will also cease to be a councilor of the City Council.

Salas arrived at the mayoralty in 2007, when he took over from Maria Antònia Munar, after 28 years at the head of the City Council. In the subsequent legislatures, he chained several absolute majorities, first with Coalition for the Islands and later with El Pi. He also presided over the Federation of Local Entities of the Balearic Islands (FELIB) between 2019 and 2023.

His replacement will be Joan Baptista Munar, current first deputy mayor and member of the municipal government team since 2011. Munar, who is 36 years old, entered the City Council when he was 21 and will assume the mayoralty with the intention of giving continuity to the El Pi project in the municipality. He will also be the party's candidate in the 2027 municipal elections.

Salas has justified his decision by the desire to make way for new generations after two decades in office. "You have to know how to make way and leave," he pointed out. The outgoing mayor also wants to focus on the next electoral campaign and on his responsibility as an island councilor for El Pi at the Council of Mallorca.

Regarding his successor, Salas has assured that Munar is "very well prepared and highly capable of leading the mayoralty". The replacement will be formalized after Friday's extraordinary plenary session.
