Jaime Martínez reorganizes Palma City Council amidst the clash with the Local Police
The Civil Service department will no longer be under the purview of Mercedes Celeste and will now fall under the new macro-area of Llorenç Bauzá.
PalmThe mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, has initiated a reorganization of the municipal organizational chart that entails significant changes in the government structure. The Civil Service department, responsible for managing City Hall personnel, will no longer report to the department headed by Mercedes Celeste and will instead be under the responsibility of Llorenç Bauzá.
With this change, the new council department will be called the Department of Public Service, Environment, Sustainability, Natural Spaces, Animal Welfare, and Innovation. Among its responsibilities is the General Directorate of Public Service, the body working on the Local Police reorganization plan, an initiative that has become one of the main points of contention during this term.
The development of this plan has stalled despite the mayor's expressed commitment to implementing it. The proposal includes a complete reorganization of shifts and staffing within the force, as well as salary increases. This would represent an increase in spending of around 10 million euros per year..
Police unions are engaged in open conflict with Martínez over this issue. After the mayor had to announce last January that he was postponing the plan's implementation, protest rallies and boycotts of public events have continued unabated.
Furthermore, the area headed by Deputy Mayor Mercedes Celeste is renamed Finance, Contracting and Heritage, and will have two general directorates: a General Directorate of Contracting, Quality and Citizen Services and a General Directorate of Heritage.
Other changes
Changes have also been introduced in the areas of Social Services, Education, Citizen Participation, Youth and Equal Opportunities, specifically in the distribution of responsibilities among its coordinators.
In this way there will be a General Coordination of Citizen Participation, Older Persons, Interculturality and District Coordination and another of Education, Youth, Social Services and Equality.
